{ node power outlet by metaphys }

plug

I was really blown away when I first laid eyes on this product concept. Naturally, I was drawn to its minimal form, but also to the simplistic function of the piece, allowing more than two plugs per outlet and virtually eliminating the need for power strips.

Designed by Metaphys in Japan. AH, Japan...

Side note: I tried to translate this via Google Translate, and my favourite mistranslated sentence was, " 'Stupidest question of' octopus wiring caused by foot." Way to go, Google.

{ tree blocks }

treeblocks

Tree Blocks are the coolest wooden building blocks ever. EVER. Their line carries blocks, houses, vehicles and other shapes, but I like the straight up original blocks the best.

I first saw them last weekend at Acorn in Brooklyn, and was later almost kicked out of ABC Home for building a three foot tower out of these which immediately fell over...

Photography of the "ghosts" of demolished houses by Marcus Buck.

This reminds of lithography. After grinding down layers of limestone to create a clean surface for printing, a ghost image of a previous print can sometimes spontaneously surface as a reminder of the stone's past experiences.

{ flake house by olgga architects }

cabin

The Flake House by Olgga Architects is a transportable cabin that combines the rustic exterior of a log cabin with a minimal, modern interior. The separation of the two spaces allows for the end grain of the wood to provide its own aesthetic contribution, and also to hide the entrance doors.

It also looks totally sweet on the back of a semi.

The French architects' translated website described the piece as, "a "folly" which deftly combines low-tech and high tech. " The treatment of this niche is more poetic to a found object as an artefact." I think Google Translate got that right...?

{ the inside out umbrella }

umbrella

This umbrella is incredible. The Inside Out Umbrella, designed by Seung Hee Son, is functional, fashionable, compact - folding into itself for transport, storage and a drip-free experience indoors! LOVE this idea.

In Japan, most retail stores and restaurants have these umbrella condom dispensers to prevent wet floors. You stick your umbrella in and it is sheathed in an umbrella-shaped plastic bag. A great idea, but it assumes that all umbrellas are the same proportion (the non-compact kind) and leaves a trash bin full of plastic at the end of the day.

{ the wynne table by stuart christie }

wynne

I am in awe at the intricacy of the wood veneer on this Wynne table by Stuart Christie. It reminds me of patchwork farmland seen from an aerial perspective.

"The wooden veneer is hand crafted from waste material and carefully sculpted into the intricate and highly decorative surface seen. This is an object that is timeless as much as it is current, the surface will age and mature with use and evolve its own patina growing with the user as the years tumble past."

stashbash

A cute and clever project by HADW and Twig & Thistle:

"Last month was officially Moustache May here in the states. Sixteen gentlemen in my office decided to participate and grow a soup strainer of their own and compete in the first ever HADW Stache Bash. On the morning of the event each person in the office was greeted by a ballot and personal moustache at their desk. No reason we couldn’t ALL join in the fun!"

I had to crop the invite to fit my layout, so please check out the full event details here and here!

{ DIY silkscreen: the dylan poster }

silkscreen

Did you ever wish you could silkscreen at home, but did not have the amenities (or finances) to support your own printing studio? Well this great DIY tutorial, the Dylan Poster, is a simple solution to the above problem. A great project for adults - with or without kids!

"Due to the impatience of the crew and pressure on the squeegee, each poster had differing amounts of ink coverage. As an introduction to screen printing and poster design, this project was perfect for my two kids... Now, they are giving out these posters to friends and figuring out what their next compositions will be."

{ autumn story animation for the fire kites }

firekites

I was immediately taken with the stop motion animation (and music) in the "Her Morning Escape" video, and it was the same with this video.

It would appear that this video, "Autumn Story" by the Fire Kites, is animated using only a few chalkboards. I love that they resisted cleaning the accumulated chalk dust from the board during each frame shot. Co-directed by Yanni Kronenberg and Lucinda Schreiber.

{ wallpaper* magazine's type tart cards }

tartcard

Creative, clever, hilarious and a bit risqué, Wallpaper*'s Type Tard Cards is the collective graphic design work of students and designers in response to the sex industry in London. Wallpaper*, in conjuntion with St Bride Library and Type, asked designers to find the tart hiding in every type and create their own graphic numbers.

"Tart cards are the means by which many London prostitutes advertise their services. Step into almost any central London phone box and you can contemplate up to 80 cards inviting you to be tied, teased, spanked or massaged.

Even if a police crackdown, the internet and the increasing use of mobile phones suggest their days are numbered, tart cards are still so pervasive they are now regarded as items of accidental art and have something of a cult following. Once on the periphery of design, tart cards have influenced the work of many mainstream artists such as Royal Academician Tom Phillips and Sex Pistols designer Ray and Nils Stevenson."

Since I am hosted by Blogger, I restricted myself to showing the least offensive explicit cards, but you should really, really check out all 450 designs of this cheeky work!

{ i <3 terrariums }

terrarium

I am currently nerding out over terrariums. Big ones, little ones, succulents, orchids - especially moss ones, and any with little accessories that create micro-environments under glass. Terrariums will be the perfect project for me in my micro-apartment in NYC!

I am considering taking this terrarium workshop whilst in NYC, lead by Tovah Martin, author of The New Terrarium.

This terrarium group on Flickr has some incredible photographs of projects both big and small. You can find some readymade and growing kits if you search for terrariums on Etsy, as well as glass environments and accessories. Last but not least, terrarium on YouTube can give you some great DIY tips.

Above: Paula Hayes, radmegan, the small object, Janick + Nea, mama kim and last but not least - terrarium watches by dewgardencrafts.

I am loving these large scale wallpaper designs by Jill Malek. The subjects are reinterpreted in a fresh way using a combination of scale and colour.
